Safer Streets Campaign

I am starting a Safer Streets campaign to highlight the need for more safe crossings in Wimbledon. Firstly, I will be campaigning for a crossing on Martin Way to help parents and children going to St Joseph Hood and a crossing on Durnsford Road to help parents and children going to Wimbledon Park Primary. I would be grateful to receive more thoughts and ideas on ways to make our streets safer.

Merton Priory Homes - High Path Estate

I recently met with Merton Priory Homes to discuss their redevelopment of High Path estate. I raised with them many points that have been put to me by fellow constituents, notably:

Merton WWI Commemoration

This week, I'm sure many of you have taken part in 'Lights Out' commemorations across the country. I also attended Merton's World War 1 event at Morden Park. This was an incredibly moving occasion, with readings, poems and music remembering that first year of the 'Great War'. Many of those who headed off to war expected to be home by Christmas, sadly they were not, nor for the next three. At the start of this four year centenary, the words of John Maxwell Edmonds are especially poignant: 'When you go home tell them of us and say: for your tomorrow, we gave our today'.

Tramlink Update

There are are proposals to extend the Tramlink from Wimbledon to Sutton. Currently, a TfL exhibition is touring the borough with details and plans.

Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium

The redevelopment of the site of the greyhound stadium just off Plough Lane is rightly attracting much attention. As yet no applications have actually been submitted but are expected by the early autumn at the latest.

New Schools for Merton

I am pleased to report that two education charities have plans to create new schools in Merton. The Harris Federation, which successfully runs Harris Academy Merton and Harris Academy Morden, has approached Merton Council to build a third school in the area to plug the shortage of secondary school places in the borough. There is also a plan to open a primary school by charity Chapel St Community Schools – which is set to open a new school called the Park Community School in September. Both organisations successfully run other schools and this is good news for us in tackling a growing problem in Merton.

Crossrail II Update

he idea of additional Crossrail 2 railway stops at Motspur Park and Raynes Park were embraced in the first consultation on regional options in 2013 when Conservatives put them forward. So I am very keen to see this plan progress and look forward to the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, coming up with a possible financing plan.

Supporting School Fetes

This weekend I opened St Joseph Hood fete and attended the Hollymount School fete. I always enjoy visiting these fetes and other local community events and Wimbledon is lucky that we have so many people prepared to give some of their time to volunteer for all manner of local community groups. If you are arranging or know of an event in your area, please do let me know by sending me an email to stephen.hammond.mp@parliament.uk
